I have not been this obsessed with a book in a very long time. James Frey's account of his six weeks in rehab at age 23 is almost indescribable. I will try a bit, though, to encourage all to read this book. It is heartbreaking yet unbelievably inspirational. To know that someone could live through what he did in such a short amount of time is remarkable. Frey tells his story in a frank, honest and engrossing manner that will stir anyone's soul. It will serve to enlighten even the cleanest living person, and perhaps create some compassion on the subject of addiction in even the hardest of hearts. The effect his life had before and during rehab on his parents and loved ones is astonishing, and the friends and support group we meet during his stay only adds to the amazement you will feel. The only other thing I can say about this book is – go get this book and read it, now! I believe you'll find it priceless.
Best Line:
"When one lives without fear, one cannot be broken. When one lives with fear one is broken before one begins to live."

WARNING: If you are offended by excessive profanity, this may not be the book for you. Having attached that disclaimer, there are plenty of other words and situations within this memoir of Mr. Frey's harrowing life and near-death to get clean and sober that one may find horrific. The author was a mere 23 years old when his parents checked him into a renowned and unnamed rehab center in Minnesota, which was clearly the place he needed to be. He describes himself as an alcoholic, addict and criminal often, and with brutal honesty he owns up to the many errors of his ways. Before reading this book, I thought it would be more of a downer than it actually was, simply because the subject matter can be graphic and ugly too often. There was plenty of that, don't get me wrong, but this book also sent a strong message of what hope and sheer determination can do for a person. I also liked that Mr. Frey challenged conventional wisdom on alcoholism and addiction recovery with the help of a small, black book his brother gave him. Bravo James!
Best Line:
"It's gonna be hard and scary and brutal, but if you just hold on, you'll be okay."
