While the unnamed narrator claims the women he has paid for sex are melancholy, he is the epitome of the word. He awakens on the morning of his 90th birthday deciding that a virgin lover would be a perfect gift to himself, so after calling Rosa Cabarcas, the madam of his favorite cat house, the evening is planned. When he arrives at Rosa's though, he finds his "gift" sound asleep. Instead of waking her that night, he sleeps next to her, and in subsequent meetings, romances the girl he calls Delgadina, without her ever being awake. I must admit, I was a little put off by the title when this book was first released, but that was because I had not been properly introduced to Senor Marquez's magical and mesmerizing words. I am forever a fan.
Best Line:
"I returned home tormented by the little demon who whispers into our ear the devastating replies we didn't give at the right time, and neither reading nor music could mitigate my rage".

An old friend used to say that we all need a few good obsessions in our life. This story is based around an obsession of "Delgadina", a sixteen year-old virgin whore that the main character wanted for his ninetieth birthday. The main character makes no excuses for never marrying, and employing many whores throughout his long life. He claims he simply never has fallen in love. Enter Delgadina, and he changes his tune. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has an extremely simple, yet expressive way of writing, and so much story is told in this short book. It will read extremely quick, and I'll bet you'll devour it – like an obsession.
Best Line:
"I never thought about age as a leak in the roof indicating the quantity of life one has left to live."
