This peppy little book starts out with a bang as 19 year-old Thomas reacts to being turned into a vampire by his girlfriend Jody. Figuring out how this vampire thing really works (like, we need some self-tanning lotion here, and maybe we should move to Alaska, ‘cause it's dark there for like twenty hours a day) and how to deal with the living leads to a lot of funny episodes. They quickly recruit the perfect little helper to get things done during daylight hours in the form of adoring and even more immature Goth girl Abby Normal. Meanwhile, Thomas's former workplace buddies are just getting back from their own crazy adventure in Las Vegas, where they managed to burn through over half a million dollars on a blue hooker, who's still in tow. The plot zips along at a speedy and superficial comic-book pace, liberally peppered with adolescent expletives. It's entertaining for awhile, but so insubstantial that it's just not compelling. I was never dying to pick it back up again after I put it down, and the junior high-ish language turned me off after awhile. It's good for an amusing break between meatier novels, though.

Best Line:
"She knew it should bother her more, being evil and all, but after she put on a little mascara and some lipstick and poured herself another cup of blood-laced coffee, she found that she was okay with it." (pg. 129)

I would have never bought this book had my son not mentioned one of the author's other novels, Fluke, and went on and on about how funny it was. The nice, independent bookstore in Durango didn't have Fluke, but they had this one so it was meant to be. The story starts out fast and furiously too, with 19 year-old, Midwestern-born Tommy Flood confronting his girlfriend Jody because she has turned him into a vampire like herself. They are in love though, and decide to make their relationship work through sundown to sunrise. They quickly realize that they need a helper for things they aren't able to do during the daytime, so Tommy recruits Abby Normal, Goth teenager that she is, and aspiring vampire too, conveniently enough. The 800 year-old vampire Elijah, who turned Jody into her new blood-thirsty self, is not happy that Tommy and Jody are creating more vampires (he believes they should be selective) so he's after them, and Abby, and some of Tommy's former co-workers called The Animals along with a blue-skinned prostitute appropriately named Blue. Oh, and there is a homeless drunk guy named William with an overweight cat that helps keep the story rolling. Does this sound like a mess of a story yet? Well it's not, because the dialogue is laugh out loud funny and the characters are super cool, besides the fact that most of them like to drink blood. If you are looking for a good time, this is the book.

Best Line:
"Jody sipped her coffee and sighed, satisfied, like she'd just had a gentle coffee orgasm, the sort of pleasurable release you only see people have in commercials for froufrou coffee and hemorrhoid cream."
